27 Lessons from My First 27 Years on The Planet!

I’m 27 years old and feel that things have just become interesting. As if the first quarter-century had been a journey to the starting line.

I took the time to write down random bits of advice, lessons and observations from my time on the planet and cut them down to my top 27.

27 years may not amount to much life experience but it’s a start. Here’s what I came up with.

Breathtaking Bali – How I stopped breathing and woke up more alive than ever

24.08.2019, 3 A.M. I wake up to quickly jump under the shower and pack my bag – swimming trunks, t-shirts, shorts. An hour later my Bluebird taxi leaves from my place. I’m headed to Jakarta Airport.

Bali, when are you not going to be just a weekend getaway anymore?

I had ordered early bird tickets for “The Marcel Hof Method” in Uluwatu, Bali.

The breathing was intense. We were doing deep stomach breaths lying next to each other on yoga mats, eyes closed. Marcel set the pace with his drum. My hands cramped up and my legs were tingling. I couldn’t move both my hands and legs. We had been told before that these things would come up and that we should fully surrender to the sensation.

I felt lightheaded. As if I was floating in complete darkness.

Today I Almost Entered China!

As I am writing this, I am sat next to the immigration counter in an empty waiting area. Pudong Airport China is empty. To my right, my luggage. Four seats to the left, an immigration officer. His eyes were about to fall. Assigned to keep an eye on me.

One and a half hours ago, China denied me entrance.

I know I am being watched, but I’m thrilled. I have never been rejected from entering a country before. Neither do I know anybody who has. This is exciting. It is expensive, considering the unnecessary flights I booked in and out of China, but maybe worth the experience. It will make a good story, that’s for sure.

This is what happens when you are too stupid to read visa requirements!

How To Tell Your Client You Messed Up!

I was the worst electronics technician in my year. It is only my semi-developed common sense that has put me in the position of a project manager today.

I have made or experienced every mistake there is.

My favourite one was when I blindly walked into a meeting dressed in ripped jeans and a polo shirt, only to find out that I was meeting Indonesia’s environment minister and international investors – all wearing suits.

Over the years, there was no problem that couldn’t be solved. A lot of the time, finding the solution to a problem is not the biggest challenge. Communicating the mistakes is. Angry clients, superiors, friends, or family members can mess you up.

Silent Meditation: Inbox Zero!

If you run on 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night for long enough, your body gets used to it. It’s not your body but your mind that gets to you first.

I wasn’t tired. I was angry and nervous. And things were getting worse. Emails with all capital letters in bold red font were flying into my inbox. I have become an expert in suppressing feelings but even I was not able to hide my anger.

Why did it take me years to try meditation?

I Am Enough!

It took me well into my 20s before I realised that I have had self-limiting behaviours. I guess I was one of those kids who took “What grade did Simon and the others get in that test”, or “Did you see what a good game Philipp played” a little too seriously.

Today I see that comparing myself with others has kept me from many things.

My friend once made me disable my Instagram for a month. We had no idea what difference this would make.

Comparison really is the thief of joy.

Setting Goals!

For as long as I can remember my father has had the worst working hours. There is barely a day where he leaves the office before 10 PM. It is his decision. Nobody asks him to. Yes, we need orders to keep this company running. Yes, there are still many processes that need to be automated. But even if the company was running perfectly, he would do the same hours at that same desk. He is not trying to be disciplined to reach his goal, it’s his goal that makes him the disciplined person he is.

The Importance Of Giving!

I’ve spent the last four and a half years in Indonesia and have learned that it is just as important to receive a gift (oleh-oleh) properly as it is to give one.

My mother would bring chocolate bars to the office and drop some on each table and it puzzles me how one would not immediately open the wrapping and go for the sugar rush. You guys can’t be all on a diet!

If we can learn something from Indonesia, then it is to give whenever we can and be truly grateful for what we receive.
